| EXIT CALM Nicky Smith (vocals)~ Rob Marshall (guitars) ~Simon Lindley (bass) ~ Scott Pemberton (drums). The time is now for Exit Calm. Two years of committed touring has built up a dedicated and adoring following, mesmerised by the monumental, rousing sound of the South Yorkshire four piece. Coming from the Northern school of integrity and determination, their hard work ethic means they’re now reaping dues through their debut album, which is sure to be one of the debut's of the year, "Exit Calm", produced by Paddy Byrne (Unkle, The Hours) and renowned mixer and remixer, Ulrich Schnauss. The all-consuming intensity of this collection of 11 epic songs would scare most guitar bands to death. Its ambition and scope is breathtaking. They have huge textured atmospheric guitars, amazing grooves and an inspired and enigmatic singer who evokes a maelstrom of emotion from even the simplest melodies. It’s the fate of any band which stands out from the crowd to be plagued by comparisons. With swirling effect-heavy guitars and layered atmospherics early Verve is one such missile thrown at the band and though Nick McCabe himself is a huge Exit Calm fan and tracked down Rob to profess his admiration, the band are too aware of their own destiny to allow distractions to hold them back. While Elbow, Spiritualized, Massive Attack, DJ Shadow and in particular Doves are influences, these bands were only important in bringing the four musicians together. Exit Calm are on their own journey and the result is a band which sounds like no other. Their uniqueness is something they are well aware of and something their manager saw in them too. Joining the bands enthusiasm and intent to make the record their own way, on there terms, retaining full charge and command, he sold an original piece of Banksy artwork to fund the making of the album. “We’ve never been part of any scene we just did it behind closed doors. We’re a guitar band poured into dance music,” says Simon. “We’re reclaiming euphoria from all the shit dance acts out there. Doves are as close to Northern Soul as you’re going to get these days and we relate more to them than any other band.” Listen to the psychedelic ambition of ‘Recovery’, the driving guitar on ‘Hearts And Minds’ and the cinematic beauty of ‘Reference’ and you’re hearing a band with a fierce claim on the future. “This album is justice for what we’ve put in”, exclaims guitarist Rob Marshall, “We’ve done the groundwork and the results are there and it’s spurred us on to take it to the next level.” And you feel the next level is the only place they will go! The story of Exit Calm begins the day Nicky joined the band after seeing an advert for a singer in a record shop in Leeds. “I’d been a fan of the lads’ old band but didn’t know it was them when I turned up to audition. I guess chance meetings are meant to be. As soon as we got together, you couldn’t deny it.” “We needed a strong head and that was Nicky,” adds Scott. “He was opinionated and just leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else that we saw. And then when we started writing together it all came together. There’s a mutual respect between us all and when one of us comes in with an idea, we spend ages working on the track until we get it how we want it to be. It’s hard to find a group of people as into it as we all are.” Nicky continues “There’s no single songwriter who dictates to the rest of us. Every little detail of the tunes are looked at – we don’t just jam any songs.” “Writing and playing”, interjects Rob, “I can’t shut off from it – which is a curse. But when I get an idea for a song, it’s a gift.” With each member owning an equal part in writing, there is no doubting that this is a group, in the very real sense of the word, who are fervently in control of their sound, vision and future. Their live shows carry the same sense of tenure. In fact their first test came with their first proper gig –in Tokyo. They spent every minute of every day in the run-up to their show, scrutinizing every aspect of each song to make sure they did themselves justice. Scott: “We give everything in our live shows. We’ve seen bands walk off stage just because there are only two people there but we had gigs in the beginning with just a few people and we’ve still given it and that’s how we got better and the crowds started growing. Now an Exit Calm show is intense and more of an event.” The band travelled the UK last year supporting the likes of Echo and The Bunnymen, The Charlatans, Modest Mouse and Soulsavers; and have overcome any setbacks with their gritty self-belief and northern optimism - including their tour van blowing up on the M1. With the momentum the band now has, and a debut album of such magnitude it’s impossible to see anything stopping them. Exit Calm - four young men who have dedicated their lives to their music and the results are what people have been waiting for, This is the start of something truly beautiful, and at last we have a band to believe in. www.exit-calm.com www.myspace.com/exitcalm | |
