SONGS: The Zephyrs - Creative Faith (edit) by Club AC30 The Zephyrs - Rip The Heart by Club AC30 VIDEO: BIOG: At the end of 2005 The Zephyrs took an open ended break. In the previous six years they'd released four albums, a single, an EP plus three compilation tracks. They'd also appeared at the Reading and Leeds festivals (2001), Primavera Sound in Barcelona (2002), Banicassim twice (2003 & 2005) and fulfilled several tours on Spain, the UK and Italy. The sessions for Fool of Regrets began as meandering home recordings in 2006; experimentation with acoustic and electronic instruments and computer recording techniques (the genesis of songs like Automatic, The lonely trekker and Cooking) in free time from office work (the inspiration for lyrics like Recruit agency and The lonely trekker). In an effort to give the songs more structure Stuart took the them to Marcus MacKay's Diving Bell Lounge studio in Glasgow with the vague thought of producing a solo album. The sessions petered out with barely half an album of incomplete musical pieces. To kick start the project again long time collaborator Michael Brennan Jnr was approached to refocus and begin mixing the songs; work was moved to his Substation studio in Fife. A variety of friends and acquaintances were pulled in to contribute to the project: local R&B band Baby Isaac performed as backing band on Wet outside dry in here; Mogwai's Barry Burns contributed Richard Manuelesque piano on Wet outside ... and Cooking along with Captain Beefheart inflected Fender Rhodes on The lonely trekker; Lisa Jen Brown, in the middle of a Gruff Rhys tour (with Michael as sound engineer) added backing vocals to Cooking, She walked me home, Wet outside ... and The lonely trekker; Gruff Rhys sang harmony on Wet outside ...; and Mary MacMaster (contributor to Sting's recent 'early music' project) played harp like a drunken wedding party on She walked me home. Still with only only half an album complete, and Michael Brennan touring with The Cure, an earlier incarnation of The Zephyrs began rehearsing with a renewed focus, albeit with a change in instruments: previous guitarist (and one time Adorable guitarist) Robert Dillam moving to drums and bass player David Nicol adding harmonium. The band rehearsed a new set of songs in preparation for Michael's return - Creative Faith, Growing, Ransom and Rip the heart. The songs were recorded quickly with mixing following intermittently over the next months. Finally Sole in the machine, originally an experimental home recording utilising an old Melos echo unit, was taken back to the Diving Bell Lounge to be mixed by Marcus MacKay. The Zephyrs were joined in 2009 by singer, guitarist Emily Hall and will be touring in summer 2010: Inverness 29th , Stornoway 30th July, London 11th, Colchester Arts Centre 13th August.
